Collaboration is enhancing existing business process with communications tools, and one of the most under utilized tools is the presence client. Presence clients like Microsoft Office Communicator, Cisco Unified Presence Client and IBM Sametime do allow for displaying availability and for the quick instant message, which enhance efficiency, but only scratches the surface of their capabilities. These clients have truly become Collaboration control panels.
Collaboration control panels are critical to enhancing productivity because they allow the normal end-user to access multiple communications methods in one simple interface. If Dan wanted to talk to Patrick he can check his presence status (which is available from Patrick’s computer or his mobile device), IM him, click to call, click to video, click to conference with Patrick and Jill, share his desktop or even present content via a projector. All of these options could be made available with the right choice of client and infrastructure.
The goal of collaboration is to increase the productivity and efficiency of our end-users. High end-user adoption must occur to achieve this goal. To obtain high end-user adoption the technical solution must be a simple, familiar and easy to use interface. Today’s presence clients really have been transformed into simple practical Collaboration control panels.
